Malibu is an affluent beach city located 30 miles west of downtown Los Angeles. Stretching more than 32 miles along the Pacific Ocean, it offers beachfront homes, perfect waves, and incredible sunsets. The Malibu Pier is a great place for dining, fishing, or watching surfers. At the north end of the city, Point Dume is an ideal location to spot migrating gray whales in the winter.

Most residents of the city live within a few hundred yards of the Pacific Coast Highway, while some homes are situated up narrow canyons, up to a mile away from the beach. Malibu is bordered by the Santa Monica Mountains to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the south, Ventura Country to the west, and Topanga to the east.

The area in which Malibu is located was part of an 1802 Spanish land grant known as Rancho Topanga Malibu Sequit. In 1892, Frederick Hastings Rindge bought the property for approximately $10 an acre. Rindge and his wife May fought a lengthy court battle to prevent a Southern Pacific Railroad line from being built through the ranch. Few roads entered the area until 1926, after the state won a court battle to obtain right-of-way and built what is now the Pacific Coast Highway.

After Frederick Rindge’s death, his widow became “land rich and cash poor.” To avoid selling off her property, after she found buff and red clay on the land, May Rindge created Malibu Potteries, which produced authentic versions of Moroccan, Mayan, Persian, Moorish, and Saracen designs. The Home of Frederick and May Rindge’s daughter, Rhonda Rindge Adamson, is known as the Adamson House and listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
