The land where Holmby Hills is located came into the possession of Spanish soldier Don Maximo Alanis under a 4,438-acre Mexican land grant in 1843. Forty-niner John Wolfskill paid $10 an acre for approximately 2,000 acres of the land in 1884 and built a ranch house on the property.
Development of Holmby Hills began after Arthur Letts, Sr., founder of Broadway Department Stores, purchased 400 acres of the Wolfskill Ranch for $100 an acre, with a masterplan for a community of grandiose estates. He named the area Holmby Hills after the small hamlet in England where he was born.
Arthur Letts, Sr. died suddenly in 1923 before his vision could be realized. His son-in-law, Harold Janss, saw the project to completion. Zoning was designed to accommodate lot sizes up to 4 acres. To preserve the landscape, telephone and electric lines were buried beneath the wide, tree-lined streets. Elegant English style street lamps, designed exclusively for the community, were erected throughout Holmby Hills.
